What Are The Top 3 Most Common Pests in Arizona?

I was pleased to sit down with a couple of the pest control professionals at Bulwark Exterminating recently, and talk candidly about the pest situation here in the Valley. I was interested to know what the most common pests are here in Arizona… The pests that are most frequently called about.

Here are the top 3 most called about pests in Arizona, according to Bulwark Pest Control Mesa:

3. Fire Ants

Fire Ant Sign What Are The Top 3 Most Common Pests in Arizona?

They’re red, they’re nasty, and in Arizona they have stung approximately 40 percent of the State’s population. I’m talking of course about the Red Imported Fire ant. These ants are known for their destructive mound building, and their painful stings which are unleashed whenever one of their huge ant mounds is threatened. Once stung, a victim will display painful red welts that rise above the skin and eventually blister. It’s because of these painful stings; Arizona residents want no part of the Fire ant and call Bulwark Exterminating in Mesa for professional Fire ant control.

2. Black Widows

Black Widow Spider In Web What Are The Top 3 Most Common Pests in Arizona?

Almost 99 percent of all spiders found in Arizona are harmless. One of the spiders that make up the remaining one percent is the Black Widow spider. Her appearance is unmistakable; with her large glossy black abdomen, and of course her bright red hour glass that warn everybody to keep their distance. Black Widows will only bite when provoked, and will likely run away when confronted. Despite this behavior, Arizona resident’s take know chances when it comes to this spider. Perhaps it’s her painful and dangerous bite that has residents calling Bulwark Exterminating in Mesa for professional spider control.

1. Arizona Bark Scorpion

Scorpion What Are The Top 3 Most Common Pests in Arizona?

The number one called about pest in Arizona, is without a doubt, the Arizona Bark Scorpion. Most Arizona residents are able to put up with a few cockroaches or crickets running around their home, but not scorpions. If you live in Arizona long enough, there’s a really high probability that you will be stung by a scorpion at some point. Anybody that has ever been stung does not want to ever go through that experience ever again. To avoid scorpion stings, it’s advised that professional scorpion control actions be taken. Arizona residents know this, and that is why scorpions are the most frequently called about pest.

Hunt Scorpions With Black Light Flashlights

Black Light Scorpion Hunt Scorpions With Black Light Flashlights

If you are the adventurous type, who finds scorpions fascinating, as opposed to running the other direction screaming in fear at the sight of one, then you are in luck. You can easily spot them with a black light. In fact, black lighting scorpions is a common method used to control the scorpion populations around your home and property… And you can do it too! It’s actually quite the nighttime adventure!

Hunt Scorpions With Black Light Flashlights

Are you worried about scorpions entering you home; hiding out in your shoes and bed sheets, waiting to sting? If so, be proactive. One such way to be proactive is to hunt them with black light flashlights. It’s actually quite fun, if you are not creeped out by these stinging arachnids.

First you need a black light flashlight. Your best bet is an LED one. They are very bright, and will really light up the glowing scorpions. You can purchase black light flashlights at at your local hardware store. You really don’t need anything huge or fancy or extra powerful.

When it gets dark, head out in your yard with your new black light flashlight. Walk along the edges of your house, paying close attention to where the stucco or siding meets the foundation. Shine the black light in these areas. The glowing scorpions jump out at you when see them. Fences and concrete walls are also popular hangouts for scorpions. We actually call these areas, scorpion condominiums. Look there as well.

If you wish to exterminate the scorpions that you find, do so with closed toe shoes or boots. Do not handle the scorpions, as they’ll unleash a very painful and very toxic sting is disturbed. Sticky tape wrapped around the outside of a ruler works well to grab them.

Why Do Scorpions Glow Under Black Lights?

UV Scorpion Hunt Scorpions With Black Light Flashlights

Fluorescent chemicals, like beta-carboline, that are found in the exoskeleton of the scorpion cause them to glow an eerie neon bluish-green when exposed to ultraviolet light. From the scorpion’s crushing pinchers to its stinging tail; the scorpions entire body collects UV light and converts it into blue-green wavelengths to the human eye. This practice is known as fluorescence. As to the functionality of this process to the scorpion, scientists still aren’t completely sure of the benefit.

Types Of Arizona Scorpions To Hunt With Black Lights

In the State of Arizona, there are two common species of scorpions you’ll frequently find in your home and on your property. These two common species are the Arizona Bark scorpion, and the Desert Hairy scorpion.

Arizona Bark Scorpion

Bark Scorpion Tail Up Hunt Scorpions With Black Light Flashlights

The most common species of scorpion found in Arizona, also happens to be the most venomous in the country. The Arizona Bark scorpion is a yellowish tan in color and can measure about two inches in length. It will come into your Arizona home, looking for water, shelter, and it’s favorite meal of crickets or roaches.

Desert Hairy Scorpion

Desert Hairy scorpions are bigger in size, compared to the Arizona Bark scorpion, reaching lengths of 5-6 inches. While their stings are painful (like getting stuck by a tack), they are not very dangerous. These scorpions don’t like to come into your home as much, but do still invade occasionally.

East Valley A Hot Zone For West Nile

300px Mosquito 2007 2 East Valley A Hot Zone For West Nile

Maricopa County experts confirm that cities like Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, and Queen Creek, will once again be a hot zone for mosquito and West Nile activity this summer.

Maricopa County Officials Verify West Nile

Last month, Maricopa County officials confirmed the deadly West Nile Virus in some of the mosquitoes found in traps they recently set. This discovery marks the earliest date that the West Nile Virus has been detected in quite some time. This has health officials worried.

Last year, cities in Maricopa County confirmed 76 different human cases of West Nile Virus. Out of these 76 cases, there were two deaths. Additionally, county officials confirmed West Nile in 168 mosquito samples.

Experts fear that 2013’s West Nile numbers will be much greater than last year because of a massive increase in mosquito activity. This increase in activity is due to the particularly wet winter, with above average temperatures this spring.

A Few West Nile Virus Facts

  • West Nile is transmitted my mosquitoes who bite infected birds.
  • Only one percent of mosquitoes carry West Nile according to the Centers for Disease Control.
  • Humans and animals alike can catch the West Nile Virus.
  • Approximately 1 out of every 150 people infected with West Nile will ever get sick.
  • West Nile symptoms include: high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis.
  • The most serious cases of West Nile can lead to meningitis or encephalitis.
  • Currently, there is no human vaccine for the virus.

East Valley Pest Control

Like I mentioned before, the East Valley is a hot bed for mosquito and West Nile activity. If you are seeing a lot of mosquitoes around your Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, or Queen Creek property; get professional pest control. Don’t mess around with the West Nile Virus.

Devin from Bulwark was great. He was very knowledgeable and helpful in answering questions about the service and how to fight the various threats to a home. The vehicle and equipment they use is impressive as well. He was thorough in his application of the product. They were able to schedule me quickly which was a treat being located on the city’s edge in east Mesa in the Las Sendas community.

- John B.
11/1/12

I have had great results with keeping the bugs at bay. In 10 years I have only had to have the inside of my house sprayed twice. Otherwise, the outside & perimeter spray has kept the bugs away.

- Roger B.
10/30/12

Service was top notch!!! Came by and did a free analysis of the yard and home and went over the findings. Showed me where the problem areas were and wrote up a great contract and serviced the entire yard and home that very same day. Service was completely thorough and we saw results right away as several scorpions were killed. I would highly recommend the service to anyone. First Class!

Chris showed up as planned and was here for 3 hours for a first appointment with them. I have never had a pest control company take the covers off of all the electrical outlets before. Very detailed work. He treated the front and back yards with special emphasis on getting to the scorpions, which is what we need.

Devin arrived promptly within the scheduled time frame, and kindly explained the treatments as well as a follow-up, ongoing service schedule if I should wish to continue to retain their services. I showed him a few scorpions that I had caught and he identified them as bark scorpions. Then he started with the interior treatment by spraying some Delta Dust inside the walls through the electrical outlets in each room. He explained that the dust is very fine and gets into the pours in the belly of the scorpion and they can’t breathe. As he began the exterior treatment, he showed me their very large truck and the 2 chemicals they use which targets scorpions, spiders, crickets, earwigs, roaches and silverfish.

Overall Grade: A

- Deborah R.
Gold Canyon, AZ

The technician that came out was very friendly and answered all my questions. He did an “in-wall” treatment and sprayed both inside and outside my home. They now come every two months automatically, but I can cancel service at any time. Before they started coming, even when I used another pest control service, I’d still find live scorpions and roaches inside sometimes. (Even though I keep a clean house, the area I live in is infested!) I haven’t had problems with scorpions since they started coming and the very few roaches I’ve seen in the house have been dead.

Overall, I have been very happy with the professional and friendly service Bulwark has provided. They’ve done a great job and I’m a happy customer!

The Different Species of Cockroaches Living in Arizona

Most of the World’s cockroaches live in far away areas like the tropics. Despite having the majority of cockroaches living in these far away areas, Mesa, AZ is still home to three different cockroach species. If you’ve ever experienced them in your home, then you know they can be a very irritating, hard to control pest. The three species of Arizona cockroaches are:

300px American cockroach mirror The Different Species of Cockroaches Living in Arizona

American Cockroach

These cockroaches are a brownish red and can measure up to two inches long. These buggers are larger and more homely in appearance when compared to the other species of Arizona cockroaches. Despite their more menacing appearance, they are not as much of a nuisance.

American cockroaches just vacation in your home for a short time. They stop by to grab a quick bite to eat. They then leave to live and mate somewhere else.

American cockroaches love hot, humid areas. They live in sewers, basements, storage rooms and garbage areas. These cockroaches can go three months with no food and a full month with no water.

300px %D0%A2%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%BD %D0%BF%D1%80%D1%83%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%BA %28%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4 %D1%81%D0%B2%D0%B5%D1%80%D1%85%D1%83%29 The Different Species of Cockroaches Living in Arizona

German Cockroach

The German cockroach is infamous! They are the most-frequent home invaders. When they invade, they set up house. They live, eat and mate under the same roof with you. They love bathrooms and kitchens because of their easy access to water and their favorite foods.

German cockroaches will eat just about anything. They are light brown in color, and are much smaller then the American cockroach, measuring only about ½ of an inch to ¾ of an inch long. These tiny pests have masses of children with one female laying well over 2,000 eggs in a calendar year. That makes for a lot of possible home invaders!

turkestanroachpic The Different Species of Cockroaches Living in ArizonaTurkestan Cockroach

Turkestan cockroaches are smaller and a little darker than the American roach. They prefer to live outside rather than in your homes and sewers. You will find then in leaf piles, flower beds, under rocks and in sprinkler control or water meter boxes.

These roaches are not as much of a health risk compared to American or German cockroaches and have one major trait most of us find annoying. They fly!

Controlling Mesa Roaches

The city of Mesa, AZ will coat the underneath of its 8,000 manholes with a latex based insecticide every couple of years. This insecticide helps tremendously in keeping the roach populations under control. On the other hand, Mesa City is only in charge of the community’s sewers. It is the citizens of Mesa who are responsible for keeping roaches out of their homes and properties.

If you are a Mesa resident, and are having cockroach problems, contact a local exterminator today!
